Growth Habit and Plant Characteristics
  • Size: Grows naturally as a large shrub or small evergreen tree. Reaches 10–20 feet tall in the ground, but stops at 4–8 feet when pruned for container growth.
  • Foliage: Densely packed, glossy, dark green leaves with blunt points. Provides excellent year-round ornamental value.
  • Taste: Tastes like a lime with notes of tangerine.
  • Flowers: Produces small, highly fragrant white blossoms with distinctive purple or pink tinges on the undersides of the petals.
  • Thorns: Features sparse, short, and relatively blunt thorns along its branches, making it easier to handle than sharper citrus varieties.
Cultivation and Climate Profile
  • Hardiness: Best suited for USDA Zones 9–11. Can survive brief, light frosts but requires protection or moving indoors if temperatures drop below 32°F (0°C). Once the tree is established is can withstand much colder temperatures.
  • Sunlight: Requires full sun, needing a minimum of 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily to maximize fruit production.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining, sandy loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). It is highly intolerant of waterlogged soil, which triggers root rot.
  • Watering: Needs regular, deep watering during the establishment phase and peak summer fruit production. Once established, it exhibits excellent drought tolerance compared to standard limes.
Commercial and Agricultural Utility
  • Harvest Season: Bears fruit heavily, typically ripening from late fall through winter, though it can produce sporadic crops year-round in tropical climates.
  • Rootstock Value: Highly valued by commercial orchardists as a hardy rootstock for grafting other citrus varieties like sweet oranges.
  • Disease Resistance: Offers strong native resistance to Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV) and high tolerance for salty soils.
