Fuyu (or Fuyu persimmon) is a popular, non-astringent variety of Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki) known for its sweet, crisp, apple-like fruit that can be eaten while firm, unlike astringent varieties. It's a popular ornamental and edible tree, prized for its bright orange fruit that persists into winter and brilliant fall foliage. Fuyu trees are self-pollinating but produce more fruit with a second tree nearby, thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, and are hardy in USDA zones 7-10.
Key Characteristics
  • Fruit: Non-astringent, sweet, and crunchy when ripe; can be eaten firm like an apple or allowed to soften
  • Appearance: Medium-large, round, flattened fruit with reddish-orange skin; brilliant yellow, orange, and red fall foliage.
  • Size: Naturally compact, often not exceeding 12-20 feet in height.
  • Pollination: Self-fertile, but planting another tree can increase yield.
