The cocktail grapefruit (also known as a mandelo) is a citrus hybrid between a Siamese Sweet pummelo and a Frua mandarin. Developed in the 1950s at UC Riverside, it isn’t actually a true grapefruit. It is incredibly juicy, exceptionally sweet, and low in acidity.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Medium to large size (about the size of a standard grapefruit or softball). The skin transitions from green to deep yellow as it ripens, though some green can remain even when perfectly ready to eat.
- Flavor Profile: Far less acidic and sweeter than a traditional grapefruit. It offers floral, orange, and herbal notes.
- Seasonality: Typically ripens and is harvested from winter through early spring (January to March).
