The calamondin (Citrus x microcarpa), also known as calamansi, is a popular natural hybrid between a mandarin orange and a kumquat. Revered for its heavy yield of tiny, tart, tangerine-like fruit, it is widely grown for ornamental use and culinary purposes.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Small, round fruit (about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter) that ripens from deep green to bright orange.
- Flavor Profile: Highly acidic, tart, and zesty. The juice tastes like a mix of lime and tangerine, while the very thin, sweet peel can be eaten whole.
- Ornamental Appeal: Famous for its year-round cycle. It features dark green foliage, highly fragrant white, star-shaped flowers, and fruit all at the same time.
Care & Cultivation
Calamondin is an excellent container plant that thrives in various climates:
- Climate: Hardy in USDA Zones 10-11. In cooler climates, grow it in a pot and bring it indoors during the winter, placing it in a sunny, south-facing window or under artificial grow lights.
- Soil: Requires a fast-draining, chunky medium, such as a blend of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark.
- Water & Light: Prefers full sun. Water consistently, allowing the top couple of inches of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
Uses
- Cooking & Drinks: Essential in Southeast Asian and Filipino cooking, calamondin juice is used to flavor savory dishes, marinades, and beverages.
- Preserves & Baking: Its high acidity and gelatinous texture make it ideal for making marmalade, cakes, and pastry glazes.
